8 tips for the summer of your animals

8 tips for the summer of your animals

Summer is finally here! While for us this season means relaxing in the sun, it requires constant vigilance for our four-legged companions. Unlike humans, dogs and cats do not regulate their body temperature through sweating: dogs release heat by panting, and cats by grooming themselves. In extreme heat, the risk of dehydration, heatstroke, or digestive upset increases significantly.

As experts, we’re sharing our essential health tips to help your pets get through the summer, along with the must-have accessories available in our store.

1. Keep your dog cool

A dog’s heart works overtime in the summer to cool the body. To help your dog, you need to work in harmony with its metabolism.

Our health tips:

1. No Soaked Kibble: Never pour water over your dog’s kibble to “cool him down.” This dilutes his stomach acid. Stomach acid must remain highly concentrated to destroy bacteria, which multiply more quickly in the summer and to properly digest proteins.

2. The trap of ice-cold water: You might think that giving your dog ice-cold water or ice cubes is a good way to help him cool off. This is a mistake. Water that’s too cold can cause thermal shock and severe stomach upset. Always opt for cool (but not ice-cold) water, and refresh it regularly.

3. Cool from the bottom up: To lower a dog’s temperature, you need to cool its heat-exchange areas: the paws and belly. Don’t rely on its nose: a warm, dry nose doesn’t necessarily mean it’s sick, its temperature fluctuates throughout the day. Instead, pay attention to its energy level and panting.

 4. Be careful with late-afternoon walks: Just because the air cools down in the late afternoon doesn’t mean the danger has passed. Asphalt and sidewalks store heat and remain scorching hot for a very long time, posing a risk of severe burns to your dog’s paw pads. Expert tip: Place the back of your hand on the ground for 7 seconds. If it’s too hot for you, it’s too hot for him!

Summer Essentials for Dogs:

A cooling jacket

This summer’s must-have for walks. It uses the natural principle of evaporative cooling. Lightweight and comfortable, it protects your dog from heatstroke during walks in the cooler hours of the day.

A cooling mat

A must-have for the home or the car. This mat works thanks to a self-activating gel that is triggered simply by body pressure – without the need for water or electricity. Dogs will naturally lie on it to cool their bellies and regulate their body temperature without experiencing a sudden temperature change.

CoolPets Pull Me! Crocky Rope Flamingo

This cool crocodile is the ultimate summer toy! Not only does it float, great fun in the water, it also fills up with water that is released as soon as your dog picks it up, preventing dehydration. Thanks to the elastic spring and sturdy squeaker inside, this is a toy your dog will love to play with.

2. Protect Your Cats from the Heat

Cats are descendants of desert animals. They rarely feel thirsty, and their bodies are programmed to get water directly from their food. In the summer, a lack of hydration immediately leads to overly concentrated urine and severe kidney problems.

Our health tips:

5. Divide wet food into smaller portions: Wet food is an incredible ally in the summer for providing the hydration their kidneys need. However, it shouldn’t be left out in the open for too long, or it will oxidize or attract flies. Divide their daily portion into several small servings to be given throughout the day. High-quality dry food, on the other hand, can be left out at all times if your cat isn’t overweight.

6. Encourage water intake: Cats hate stagnant water, which they see as a breeding ground for bacteria.

7. Don’t force a bath to beat the heat: If your cat seems to be suffering from the heat, giving it a cool bath is a bad idea. For the vast majority of cats, a bath is a source of immense stress that will cause its heart rate and body temperature to rise. To cool it down gently, choose a cool, closed room and gently wipe its coat with a damp cloth.

  8. The pitfall to avoid: Canned tuna meant for humans, opened during a summer cocktail hour, is absolutely unsuitable for your cat. It’s too salty and nutritionally incomplete, and can cause serious deficiencies if fed regularly. Stick to their specialized cat food!

Summer Essentials for Cats:

A Cat Water Fountain

This is the number one health accessory for summer. The constantly moving water catches a cat’s eye, stimulates its instinct to drink, and oxygenates the water so it stays fresh and clean at all times. Essential for reducing the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD).

A cooling mat (Wolters Cat & Dog)

Don’t forget, cats love cool spots too! Placed on their favorite sleeping spot or near their resting area, this small gel mat provides a cool surface that cats crave during heat waves.

Our expert’s advice for a stress-free summer

The secret to a successful summer lies in planning ahead and respecting your pet’s needs. Remember to protect your pet’s gut microbiome: avoid sudden changes in diet and treats from our table (which are too high in salt, spices, or lactose—substances their bodies can’t metabolize).

Get a head start by setting up cooling spots around the house right now. A well-hydrated metabolism, protected from nighttime heat, is the key to a perfectly healthy vacation.

A quick tip for heading off on vacation: A car ride can be a major source of stress or discomfort for your pet. Be sure to prepare for the trip by investing in a suitable calming product to soothe your dogs and cats during long journeys. (Excellent Pets No Stress)
