The basis of any good horse feeding plan is roughage in sufficient quantity and of the best quality, as it is the most natural feed for horses. Your horse requires at least 1.5% - 2.0% of its body weight in roughage (measured in dry matter). Based on a dry matter content of 85% in hay, a 600 kg horse needs approximately 12 - 14 kg of hay per day if it does not have access to grass. If roughage intake is restricted—due to dental problems or poor hay quality—this amount must be fully or partially ensured by a high-quality hay substitute.
